There is a caveat to the above statement. If a domain name is less than 5 days old, it is possible to have the domain deleted from the registry and a new domain name registered. This attracts a nominal fee.

]]> When a domain isn’t renewed during the domain renewal grace period it enters the redemption grace period. The redemption period typically lasts for 30 days. The cost to redeem the domain is NGN 35,000.00 + the domain renewal fee.

If a domain is not redeemed during this period, it is then placed in the “Pending Delete” state for up to 5 days and the domain owner is unable to recover the domain name.  After the 5 days has elapsed, the domain is deleted and returned to the domain pool. At this point it is available to the public for fresh registration.
